ÑINGA CANDIKA

Movement, Dance & Physical Theatre

Migration transforms us. It invites us to begin again, to build relationships not only with others but also with ourselves, to create community, and to discover new ways of belonging. Arriving in a country where no one knows your history, your work, or your artistic voice can be both challenging and profoundly transformative. It is an experience shared by many artists who leave their homelands carrying not only their practice but also their memories, languages, and cultural heritage.

Ñinga Candika was born from a desire to create spaces where migrant artists, local artists, communities, and culturally diverse voices can meet through artistic practice of exceptional quality. At the heart of this independent dance company is the belief that artistic practice has the capacity to foster belonging, nurture empathy, warmth, tenderness, and to strengthen community through professional practices and shared creative spaces. Through performances, creative laboratories, workshops, residencies, and collaborative projects, Ñinga Candika invites participants to explore identity, memory, migration, spirituality, ecology, and our relationship with ourselves and the environment. It values the richness that emerges when different cultural perspectives meet with openness, respect, curiosity, and creativity.

The Story Within the Name

Ñinga Candika is a sound, a vibration of comfort and warmth. It comes from a lullaby I heard from my grandmother while growing up in the Colombian Andes. Although I never knew its exact meaning, its rhythm felt like a mantra, an ancient vibration from nature carrying a memory beyond words. It represented a sense of connection, belonging, and tenderness; a rhythm capable of transforming feelings of despair, separation, and isolation.

Ñinga, to me, evokes the inner intelligence carried through memory, the innate wisdom of the body that remembers its dance of stars and galaxies, and the strength that emerges from ancestral connection. It represents resilience, intuition, and the invisible threads that connect us to who we are and where we come from.

Candika is a playful sound that somehow, through my own journey, has become connected with roots in Indian spiritual traditions. My path has been interwoven through encounters between Eastern and Western cultures, and Candika evokes for me the energy of Goddess Chandika: a fierce and compassionate force that dissolves ignorance, fear, and oppression, creating space for clarity, courage, movement, and transformation. Together, these two words represent the meeting of different lineages, memories, and ways of knowing. They reflect the spirit that defines the essence of our work: a place where ancestral knowledge, spirituality, contemplative practice, relationship to nature and the environment, creative research and contemporary artistic practice coexist.

Ñinga Candika is ultimately a space for encounter. It is a home for artistic exploration and collective imagination. A place where migrants and local communities can come together to create, listen, move, question, celebrate, and discover one another through the universal language of performing arts, movement, and dance.
